SPRING BANDING OPERATIONS 2011

Spring Long Term Volunteer - Phil Wilson

PEPtBO has a number of visiting banders over the course of the spring and fall seasons who come for training with bander-in-charge David Okines, a NABC (North American Banding Council) certified Trainer. This spring PEPtBO welcomed Phil Wilson.

Phil WilsonPhilip Wilson was born and raised in the city of Toronto, where he quickly learned that he was not meant to live in an urban environment. Phil attended Sir Sandford Fleming College and graduated in 2005 from the Fish and Wildlife Technology program. He then transferred to Trent University on a scholarship and graduated in 2007 with an honours degree in Wildlife Biology. His main focus has been and remains to be wildlife management. Since that time, Philip has worked in various places including Cuba, the Albertan Rocky Mountains , northern, central and southern Ontario, Jordan, and most recently finished working a two year contract with Environment Canada in the Protected Areas Program. Philip is currently embarking on another academic journey as he prepares for a Masters of Science in Biology at the University of Western Ontario. His focus is on the movement patterns and habitat selection of an arctic breeding species, the Long-tailed Duck, while found wintering at Lake Ontario. This past winter, Philip and a team of researchers captured LTDU on Lake Ontario and implanted adult birds with satellite transmitters. This information will be used to overlay LTDU locational information with planned development sites for offshore industrial wind turbines.
